On Wednesday evening, presumptive GOP nominee and 45th President Donald Trump joined Newsmax's Greg Kelly to discuss the upcoming 2024 election. However, a poignant moment took place during the interview when Kelly asked the Republican leader about how he handles loss in his life given the various family members of his who have passed away in recent years.
"You're a tough person, obviously," the Newsmax host said. "But you have experienced loss like anybody else. You've lost your brother over the past couple years, your sister, your late wife Ivana. How do you greive? Becuase you were right back at work, you had to be. It is hard to conceive somebody like you shedding tears and I'm curious, did it happen then? Has it happened?"
"So, I don't like to do it. When you lose somebody, it is very tough," Trump responded. "I lost my mother-in-law very recently. She was a great woman. A beautiful woman, inside and out, and she died. And I will tell you, it's a tough thing. I don't like to show that. I don't like to see it."
"But you have to," Kelly said. "Sure you do. You do when you lose somebody that you really love," Trump said. "My sister, my brother, when you lose your parents, it's a very tough thing, and I find nothing wrong with it. But I don't like to do it in public. Now I have to tell you, sometimes I don't think you can really help it, and that's okay too, but grieving is grieving. When you lose somebody that is very close, in many ways, if you don't grieve, perhaps you're not such a good person."
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Trump has experienced several personal losses in recent years, including the loss of his brother, Robert S. Trump, in 2020 and his first wife, Ivana Trump, in 2022. Trump also recently lost his older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, at the age of 86, to cancer late last year. While he has suffered considerable loss in his life, his many children and grandchildren likely bolster his spirits daily. Trump has a strong relationship with his five children, including Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, Tiffany Trump, and Barron Trump. The 45th president also has ten grandchildren.
