On Monday, the Trump campaign blasted Vice President Kamala Harris as being a "stereotypical leftist" who wants to "cancel American traditions" for supporting efforts to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day.
"Kamala Harris wants to get rid of this holiday honoring the hero that discovered a new world," a Trump campaign press release reads. "In 2019, Kamala said she'd support renaming Columbus Day and 'a review of Harris' X account for her vice presidency shows she has exclusively celebrated Indigenous Peoples' Day over Columbus Day each year she has been in the office.'" The Trump campaign pointed to Kamala Harris' support for renaming Columbus Day during her 2019 campaign in the Democratic presidential primary when she told a New Hampshire voter that she can "count" on her for changing the name of the national holiday.
Trump campaign National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that a Trump second term would ensure that the legacy of Columbus is honored rather than erased by left-wing activists. "Kamala Harris is your stereotypical leftist. Not only does she want to raise taxes and defund the police — she also wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day," Leavitt said. "President Trump will make sure Christopher Columbus' great legacy is honored and protect this holiday from radical leftists who want to erase our nation's history like Kamala Harris."
In recent years, left-wing activists have been calling for Columbus Day to be renamed to instead honor the tribal peoples that inhabited the Americas before European colonization, as previously reported by The New York Post. Efforts to rename the day, as well as moves to remove statues of the famous explorer, have faced stiff resistance from conservatives who argue that those seeking to eliminate the national holiday honoring Christopher Columbus' achievement are anti-historical and are failing to view his actions in the context of the period and the violence of the indigenous populations.
Despite these nuances, Vice President Harris has repeatedly come out in support of renaming Columbus Day. During a 2021 speech commemorating the day, Harris said that the legacy of the European explorers is a "shameful" past that must not be forgotten. "It is an honor to be with you this week as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day. As we speak the truth about our nation's history. Since 1934, every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers that first landed on the shores of the Americas. But that's not the whole story. That has never been the whole story. Those explorers ushered in a wave of devastation for tribal nations, perpetrating violence, stealing land, and widespread disease."
"We must not shy away from this shameful past, and we must shed light on it and do everything we can to address the impact of the past on native communities today," she added.
