As the 2024 Summer Olympics opened in Paris, France, a musical piece featuring drag queens stirred controversy after the group mocked the famous "Last Supper" painting of Jesus Christ and the 12 disciples. The musical performances, all of which were performed along the Seine River, also included a scantily clad bearded singer and a man nearly naked man painted blue.
"This is crazy. Opening your event by replacing Jesus and the disciples at The Last Supper with men in drag," Clint Russell wrote. "There are 2.4 billion Christians on earth and apparently the Olympics wanted to declare loudly to all of them, right out of the gate NOT WELCOME."
"The Olympics opens by making a demonic mockery of the Christian faith," Daily Wire host Matt Walsh posted.
Other commentators argued that the performance wasn't just anti-Christian but pro-Satanic. "In this scene from the Olympic opening ceremony, the famous painting of The Last Supper is recreated, but Jesus is replaced with an obese woman, while queer and trans figures (including a child!) depict her apostles," Jenna Ellis posted to X. "Overt pagan and satanic symbolism."
While the French authorities responsible for the opening ceremony seemed to be happy with the performance, French conservatives sent a different message. "To all the Christians of the world who are watching the #Paris2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation," French politician Marion Marechal explained.
The French Olympics' opening ceremony will be watched by tens of millions from around the globe, and its anti-Christian messaging will tarnish France's reputation. France, a formerly Catholic-dominated society, has become increasingly secularized in recent decades, with only 29 percent of its population identifying as Catholic, according to a recent survey. The drag queen parody of The Last Supper is a slap in the face to Christians worldwide and won't be forgotten by those thinking of visiting the country.
