On Monday, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) joined Newsmax to discuss the state of the 2024 presidential race and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump's latest proposal to end federal taxes on income derived from tips for service and hospitality workers.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Trump made the announcement during a packed Las Vegas rally on Sunday, offering a glimmer of hope amid Bidenomics to his working-class supporters. "So this is the first time I've said this — and for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you're going to be very happy — because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips, people making tips: We're not going to do it," Trump said. "And we're going to do that right away, first thing in office, because it's been a point of contention for years and years and years."
In response to the policy announcement, Rep. Van Drew shared his insights, highlighting the potential impact of this proposal on the 2024 presidential race. "I think, No. 1, just by being there and letting those folks know that he cares and he cares about Nevada and Nevada issues," the New Jersey representative told Newsmax. "Secondly, I think what he discussed is less taxes, not taxing people's tips. We make it harder and harder for people to make a living."
"They get a pay raise; it goes to taxes, fees, and other costs. I think he's going to really speak out about that," he continued. "By the way, that would be great in New Jersey and our casino industry and all the tourism industry that we have in the southern part of the state as well. So, I think he's going to be strong on the issues."
"It's the main stuff. Don't tax people to death. Keep our borders intact. Make it affordable for young people to buy homes," the GOP representative added. "You've got to earn double the income today that you earned four years ago in order to buy a home in the United States of America. Those issues are going to drive this election towards President Trump."
According to the Five Thirty Eight polling average, Trump has a five-point lead over Biden in the Copper State with 42.7 percent support compared to Biden's 37.7 percent and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s 8.8 percent. With Nevada being known for its hospitality industry, Trump's plan to not tax tips could ensure that he maintains his lead going into November.
