WATCH: Chairman Smith SLAMS Hunter Biden For 'Creating A Very Serious Constitutional Crisis'

Over the weekend, Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) joined Maria Bartiromo on 'Sunday Morning Futures' to discuss President Joe Biden's son Hunter's decision to sidestep Congress and refuse to appear for a congressional subpoena, an act that could lead to jail time. Last week, Hunter refused to sit for a closed-door deposition in Congress after being subpoenaed by House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) last month.

Instead of appearing before the committee, the 53-year-old Biden held a press conference to demand that he be given the opportunity to testify publicly rather than appear in a closed-door session. In response, Chairman Comer revealed that they would be "more than happy" to hold a public hearing to call the president's son's bluff and have him testify in front of the American people. Additionally, the committee announced that they would be holding Hunter in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena.

Instead of appearing for his deposition, which was scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Hunter slammed Republicans outside of the Capitol to the press. "They belittled my recovery, and they have tried to dehumanize me, all to embarrass my father, who has devoted his entire life to public service," he said. "For six years, I have been a target of the unrelenting Trump attack team. 'Where's Hunter?' Well, here's my answer. I am here." Hunter then quickly left the press conference without taking any questions from the media. Given his blatant disregard for the law, House Republicans announced that they would be holding Hunter in contempt.

"Hunter Biden defied a lawful subpoena today, and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings. There will be no special treatment because his last name is Biden," the House Oversight Committee wrote. "Joe Biden & his family must be held accountable for their corruption."

Fox News host Maria Bartiromo slammed the president's son for his blatant disrespect for the House of Representatives, saying, "That's amazing that Hunter Biden could go defy a congressional subpoena, set up shop right in front of the steps of the Capitol, do a press conference with the guy who's helped pay all this stuff out, and then walk away. That's — you're not getting your deposition."

"Maria, if you or I or any other American would do that, we would be prosecuted," Chairman Smith said in response, per Breitbart. "It's clearly a two-tiered justice system. It's exactly what the IRS whistle-blower — whistle-blowers have highlighted, why they came forward. The fact that Hunter Biden was supposed to be in the halls of that building going through a congressional subpoena through depositions, and he defied that by standing on the footsteps of the Capitol and doing a press conference, the fact that he is the president's son, and he's doing that, is creating a very severe constitutional crisis."
