2022 has been an eventful and successful year for the country of North Korea. Since the start of January, the country has tested 6 missiles.
Given the weak leadership of the West, North Korea has again started to uptick its weapons testing program. Despite new sanctions by the United States, it does not appear that North Korean leadership is undeterred in producing weapons.
The Korean Central News Agency, which is the state media for North Korea, released images of Kim Jong-Un and other blurred-out officials in an ammunition factory. North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un states that “the factory holds a very important position and duty in modernizing the country’s armed forces and realizing national defense development strategy.” Additionally, Kim states that it is their right to national defense and that they will continue to develop weapons for that purpose.
Analysts of the situation suspect that long-range missiles are being developed in the factory that Kim was pictured in, in order to further develop the nation’s methods of modern self-defense.
Two recent launches proved North Korea’s ability to hit distant targets with high precision. These missiles flew 1118 miles for a total of 2 hours and 32 minutes before impacting their target islands. North Korea additionally tested two short-range ballistic missiles on January 27th.
According to international law and the self-imposed moratorium, North Korea is banned from producing and testing ballistic weapons. Earlier this month, the KCNA released a statement by Kim Jong-Un expressing that they would be reconsidering the moratorium.
Overall, it seems that this is just the beginning of the increase of tests for North Korea. We are likely to continue to see North Korea conduct tests at this pace as a method of continued deterrence against the United States and its allies in the region.
