Amid Fox News's plummeting viewership with Tucker Carlson's, its popular pundit and cable news show host, departure from the network, Carlson's influence with the Republican base remains largely unshaken and he may be set to moderate an alternative Republican primary debate.
Mr. Carlson has reported to have been in talks with former President Donald Trump, the current Republican frontrunner in the 2024 race, to establish such a forum, according to Just the News. This comes after Mr. Trump refused to participate in Fox News's current attempt to host the first Republican primary debate.
Trump said that his boycott of that primary debate was motivated by the fact that he regards Fox News as a "hostile network" as well as his major lead in the polls.
"When you're way up, what's the purpose of doing the debate?" Trump put it and added that "If you're tied, if you're a little ahead... you should definitely debate...You don't have an obligation when you have people like - I won't mention names - but everybody's at 1% and DeSantis is way down." Trump did emphasize that he would debate his Democratic opponent in the general because "you have really an obligation to do that."
Trump did decided to participate next week in a CNN Town Hall style meeting where local members of the community get to ask the former (and possible future) President questions and relay their concerns to him. Trump posted on Truth Social about this event and advertised his participation. He wrote "Going into the heart of Enemy territory, but maybe the Enemy is changing?"
As Just the News pointed out, organizing an alternative forum for the Republican primary debate would typically be very challenging but Trump's status as the frontrunner might provide the necessary credibility to that project to make it feasible.
Tucker Carlson is not an irrevelant factor either as evidenced from the fact that he is reportedly entertaining offers from Newsmax, One America Network, and other media outlets to join them.
