Trump Dominates Republican Competition in New Poll As DeSantis Struggles to Maintain Support in Home State

A new poll released Monday by Victory Polling shows that 45th President Donald Trump is dominating in Florida against every other current Republican candidate as well as Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).

The pollster assessed three different scenarios and in each, Trump led handily in the Sunshine State.

In the first scenario, which was a full roster of candidates, Trump won 42.9 percent of the vote while Gov. Ron DeSantis got 34.8 percent support, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy got 3.5 percent, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley got 3.2 percent, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson received 1.4 percent, and 13.9 percent were undecided.

In the second scenario, where Gov. DeSantis was not included, Trump dominated even more with 65.9 percent support. Haley only received 7.8 percent and every other candidate had less than two percent of respondents say they would support their candidacy.

Perhaps most important was scenario three in which the pollster asked respondents to decide between Trump and DeSantis.

Even in a hypothetical two-way race, Trump still beats out the Florida governor with 46.6 percent support to DeSantis’ 31.8 percent.

“In November 2022, our polling showed DeSantis with a 10.9-point lead over Trump in the Sunshine State,” the pollster explained. “Five months later, Trump has retaken the lead in astounding fashion, beating DeSantis by 14.8 points. The number of undecided voters has also inched upward, increasing by 5.5% over the past five months.”

An interesting dynamic present within the polling data is the role that economic status has on the respondents’ feelings towards Trump or DeSantis with the socioeconomic status being the strongest predictor as to who would support each candidate.

Interestingly, Trump dominated DeSantis with lower-class and middle-class voters winning 54 percent and 48 percent of those voters respectively. Upper-class voters, however, weren’t quite as enthusiastic for Trump when compared to those lower down the economic ladder. Trump did however still win a plurality of them with 41 percent compared to DeSantis’ 34 percent.

The poll also found that nearly 90 percent of Florida Republicans saw the indictment against him brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) as politically motivated, likely increasing Trump’s support.

As the leading 2024 Republican candidate shows that he is leading in poll after poll across the country, the polls coming out of Florida are bad news for DeSantis.
