As one of the largest states in the Union, Texas has become a political behemoth that is essential for Republicans to win in every presidential election cycle. For 45th President Donald Trump, that will not be a problem.
According to a new University of Texas poll, Trump dominates President Joe Biden by nine points, with 48 percent of voters supporting a second term for Trump compared to 41 percent in favor of Biden. Biden's chances don't improve with third-party candidates thrown into the mix. When independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein joined the matchup, Biden still lost with only 36 percent support compared to Trump's 43 percent.
Trump's dominance in Texas is just a mirror of his performance both nationwide and in swing states across the country. According to the Real Clear Politics polling average, Trump currently leads Biden by 1.3 points nationally. In the swing states, Trump's chances look even better given that he currently leads in every state critical for winning the presidency, including North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada.
When looking at the Republican primary, which is all but over despite former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) refusing to drop out, Trump continues to dominate with 80 percent support in the Lone Star State compared to Haley's nine percent support from Texans. Making matters even worse for the former UN Ambassador, who has repeatedly claimed that she is the stronger general election candidate, she would lose Texas, and therefore the presidency, if she went up against Biden. In a hypothetical head-to-head, the poll found that Haley would only receive 31 percent support compared to Biden's 40 percent.
In addition to polling the presidential race, the poll also found that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) will cruise to an easy victory against his Democrat challenger, Rep. Collin Allred (D-TX). The poll found that 46 percent of Texans supported Cruz compared to 32 percent backing Allred. Cruz's most fierce challenge was by former Democrat gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) in 2018, where Cruz defeated the El Paso native 50.89 percent to Beto's 48.33 percent.
The 2024 election could be a significant victory for Republicans if the grassroots can energize support for Trump and down-ballot candidates nationwide. Republicans could easily retake the Senate while holding the House, with competitive races in Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Arizona. If successful, Trump could enter office with a powerful Republican trifecta that could bring transformative change to the country beginning January 21, 2025.
