According to Reuters, the decision came after members of Congress agreed to drop the case earlier in June. The Biden administration had petitioned the court to block the lawsuit shortly beforehand. As reported by The Hill, in an unsigned order, the ruling of the lower court in the matter was vacated with instructions to dismiss.
The Biden DOJ wrote to the justices, "Three weeks after the Court granted review, respondents filed a notice of voluntary dismissal in district court, Although that notice does not of its own force terminate proceedings in this Court, respondents’ abandonment of their claims does render this case moot.."
Initially, House Democrats were attempting to strongarm the General Services Administration into handing over all documents regarding its lease to the Trump Organization. However, the House Oversight Committee was able to gain access by other means, rendering the request moot.
The alleged scandal amounted to little despite insinuations that Trump used the hotel and various events to enrich his own family leading to a failed lawsuit from D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The historic 'Old Post Office' building with its iconic clocktower operated as the "Trump International Hotel" from 2017 until its sale to Waldorf Astoria in May 2022.
"We took a dilapidated and underutilized government building and transformed it into one of the most iconic hotels in the world," Eric Trump of the Trump Organization told NBC News in a statement cited by the Mail. "We are incredibly proud of what we accomplished."
The Democrat-led House probe of the hotel claimed that the hotel lost Trump's business some $70 million, however, he refuted this assessment, stating the hotel netted $150 million for the company. The property reportedly sold for $375 million as well.
