On Monday, the hit Angel Studios film 'Sound of Freedom' surpassed Disney's disappointing summer blockbuster 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' in domestic earnings.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the movie is about the real-life child sex trafficking ring that exists throughout Latin America and the United States. The movie itself is based on the true story of Tim Ballard, a former CIA agent, who becomes frustrated only capturing people who watched child pornography in the United States and not catching those responsible for making the evil product.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film has garnered $172,813,772 after opening on July 4th in 2,852 theaters, notably far fewer theaters than the normal Hollywood production. After its initial success, the film's showings were expanded to 3,411 theaters.
As revealed by film producer Eduardo Verástegui, 'Sound of Freedom' was initially pitched to Disney but the company passed on the film. That mistake seems to have come back to bite them after 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,' featuring acclaimed actor Harrison Ford, was only able to bring in $172,624,353 domestically.
Meanwhile, the new film 'Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning' starring Tom Cruise only has a domestic box office haul of $159,555,870, per Box Office Mojo. That's despite the fact that the film was released in 4,327 theaters right on its opening day of July 12, only a few days after 'Sound of Freedom.'
Other big-name Hollywood films released earlier this year aren't stacking up well against the Jim Caviezel film either.
The long-established franchise 'Transformers' has been beaten out as well with the latest installment 'Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' only able to bring in $157,008,556 over its theatrical run after releasing on June 9th.
Other franchises also didn't keep up with the success of 'Sound of Freedom' with 'Creed III' only bringing in $156,248,615. The film was released earlier this year on March 3rd.
The success of 'Sound of Freedom' is unparalleled and goes to show just how far a story with a powerful and important story can go thanks to the millions of Americans who went to the theater to support the film.
