Republicans in Congress are pushing to expand the child tax credit to include unborn children as well as those that are already born.
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) is heading the package of bills through the House that has been named the Providing For Life Act. The set of bills is making an attempt to completely overhaul the current family care system in place by the federal government.
The change isn’t just looking to protect unborn life but also encourage more families to expand and help them financially through the process. Rep. Hinson spoke with Fox News Digital about the package of legislation, saying that it “charts the policy course for a culture of life in America.”
"By expanding the child tax credit to include the unborn and providing additional support to working families, empowering women to care for their babies regardless of socioeconomic status or zip code, and improving access to community resources, we can make a meaningful difference for those in need," Hinson said.
"These provisions, and others championed by the pro-life community, will ensure we protect the most vulnerable and make critical investments in the long-term well-being of our families," she added.
The bills would change the current refundable child tax credit that only awards up to $2,000 per dependent to a much larger $3,500 for children five and under and $4,500 for children aged between six and seventeen. At least one parent will need to be actively employed to receive the tax credits under the bill.
The $3,500 tax credit will also apply to unborn children, but parents must give birth to the child and then be able to retroactively claim the tax credit for the previous year. They will also be able to get the child tax credit for the current year, effectively allowing them a double child tax credit for their child’s first year.
The bills don’t only deal with child tax credits with another measure allowing for parents to draw from Social Security to finance up to three months of paid parental leave whenever a child is born. There is also a bill that provides incentives for states to create guidelines for fathers paying part of the pregnancy cost and forcing cooperation with any child support requirements to receive SNAP food benefits.
A counterpart to the bill was recently introduced in the Senate by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who talked about the immense help that the bill will provide for children and families in America.
"Supporting pregnant mothers and their unborn children is essential, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because America’s continued strength depends on the next generation," Rubio told Fox News Digital. "This comprehensive legislation will provide real assistance for American parents and children in need. We need policies like these to show America that conservatives are pro-life across the board."
The bills push for a positive change in America that helps to build families in a time when many struggle to financially support their loved ones. Of course, it’s very likely to receive pushback from Democrats due to its inclusion of unborn life as children under the bill but all that it does is further provide tax benefits to American families.
