Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy (R) made a statement on the transgender movement in the United States, saying the U.S. “is creating more gender dysphoria” and “confusion” among the youth.
Ramaswamy appeared on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” where he said, “I think that when a kid says that I’m born into the wrong body, that my gender doesn’t match my biological sex, more often than not that is a case of a mental health disorder.”
Following Ramaswamy’s statement, anchor Chuck Todd asked whether Ramaswamy has ever discussed the topic with the parents of transgender children to attempt to understand their perspective. Ramaswamy said “I have, actually. It’s a difficult place to be, I acknowledge that. But what we need to do on both sides here is act with compassion, not really what makes us feel good about ourselves.”
Ramaswamy spoke of the culture around shaming parents as bigots that do not embrace their children's gender dysphoria. However, Ramaswamy countered that line of reasoning with “So, part of what I think is, listen, gender dysphoria for the rare few people who have suffered, it is a condition of suffering. My question is: Why on earth are we going out of our way to create even more of it?”
When asked whether laws limiting children's access to sex reassignment surgery would contradict conservatives' ideals of limiting government overreach, Ramaswamy said “There isn’t a state in this union that allows you to smoke an addictive cigarette before the age of 18, that allows you to get a tattoo before the age of 18 – that’s a body-altering change that a kid may later regret in life.”
In the interview, the Republican candidate also definitively declared his opinion that gender was binary, as when he was asked if he was confident it wasn't on a spectrum, he responded with “I am.”
Ramaswamy appears to be another good candidate for the Republican ticket in the 2024 election. Although he will be going against heavy hitters like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis, Ramaswamy is a representative of a more youthful Republican Party.
As a multimillionaire at 37, he is one of the youngest people to ever run for president, just barely qualifying for the minimum age requirement. Regardless, he seems strong in his beliefs and understanding of the danger that the LGBTQ agenda poses to America's youth.
