Pronoun War Turns Fatal: Florida Teen Kills Mother Over "Misgendering"

Julia Egler, the Florida teenager convicted of killing her mother and her mother’s boyfriend, told investigators that repeated arguments over her gender identity played a central role in the murders.

Police footage from the investigation shows Egler — who preferred to be called “Jasper” — acknowledging that disputes over pronouns and identity were a frequent source of conflict in the home. According to investigators, Egler said her mother was “not very accepting,” and confirmed that arguments often involved being referred to as “Julia” instead of “Jasper,” or being addressed with female pronouns.

Egler was arrested in July 2024 at the age of 16. Initially, she told authorities that a home invasion had taken place and that an unknown intruder murdered her mother, Kelley McCollom, and her mother’s boyfriend, Matthew Szejnrok. That account later unraveled during the investigation.

During questioning, officers asked Egler directly whether her mother intentionally used female pronouns or refused to refer to her by her preferred name. Egler responded affirmatively.

Investigators determined that Egler used a .38 caliber revolver taken from her mother’s bedroom to carry out the attack. McCollom died from a gunshot wound. Szejnrok was still alive after being shot and was then repeatedly stabbed with a kitchen knife. According to the investigation, he allegedly asked Egler to reload the firearm and finish the attack.

The case has drawn national attention not only because of its brutality, but because of the stated motive. It highlights the intense emotional and ideological conflicts that can arise within families over questions of identity, authority, and parental roles.

While the legal case has concluded with a conviction, the broader cultural conversation it raises remains ongoing. For many Americans, the tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger family stability, parental guidance, and serious conversations about how society addresses youth identity struggles before tensions spiral into irreversible violence.
