WATCH: Pro-Trump Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig Announces Run For Senate

On Tuesday, retired Detroit Police Chief James Craig, a supporter of 45th President Donald Trump, announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Michigan as a Republican.

The seat Craig is running for is currently held by Democrat Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), who has announced she is not seeking reelection.

"I'm not running to represent the right or the left. I'm running to represent everyday Michiganders tired of a government not working for them and a D.C. establishment more worried about maintaining power than creating real change," Craig said in his announcement speech.

Craig's entire career has been in "public service, defending men and women in cities," and he's "not going to stand by while Michigan is defenseless in D.C."

From 2013 to 2021, Craig served as Detroit police chief after a three-decade-long career in law enforcement. Craig gained national support amid the Black Lives Matter riots for maintaining law and order.

"Everything that I see going on today … it's frustrating. I'm angry about so much when it comes to open borders and seeing the level of fentanyl poisoning," Craig said in an interview with Fox News.

"I don't call it overdose. I call it poisoning because it's by design and these Mexican cartels are allowing this poison or bringing this poison into America," he added.

Craig is the only candidate in the race to have endorsed President Trump. You can view his campaign launch video below:

Recently, Craig reacted to Trump's trip to Michigan, writing on Twitter/X, "President Trump in Michigan: 'The Auto Industry is being assassinated.'"

"Trump is right. The Biden Administration’s obsession with Electric Vehicles will KILL manufacturing jobs in Michigan. If you want an EV, that’s fine. Personally, I won’t be caught dead in one," Craig added.
