In a stunning turn of events, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been barred from communion by her regional San Fransisco Archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone. The reason is her non-Catholic stance on abortion — a stance which has put many Democrat politicians at odds with the Catholic Magisterium. Per Fox News, the Archbishop said the following to Speaker Pelosi in a letter:
“A Catholic legislator who supports procured abortion, after knowing the teaching of the Church, commits a manifestly grave sin which is a cause of most serious scandal to others. Therefore, universal Church law provides that such persons ‘are not to be admitted to Holy Communion,'”
Then he laid out the penalty:
“Therefore, in light of my responsibility as the Archbishop of San Francisco to be ‘concerned for all the Christian faithful entrusted to [my] care” (Code of Canon Law, can. 383, §1), by means of this communication I am hereby notifying you that you are not to present yourself for Holy Communion and, should you do so, you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion, until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.”
This is not the first time such penalties have been applied to Democrat politicians. It happened to John Kerry and Joe Biden during their presidential campaigns. But in light of the recent SCOTUS leak, the penalty suggested is all the more impressive and, truly, remarkable in its braveness.
