New York Governor Declares State Of Emergency As New York City Becomes Overwhelmed By Migrants – 'Disaster is Imminent'

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) issued an executive order on Tuesday to attempt to bolster the state’s efforts to aid New York City with its increasing influx of migrants seeking asylum.

The move from the governor comes after suburbs of the Big Apple became irate at the plan from city Mayor Eric Adams (D) to bus migrants out of the city and into the suburbs, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer

Hochul says the order will allow for New York to bring in as many as 500 more National Guard members to aid the city in the chaos, adding to the already deployed 1,000 members, per Politico. The order also allows the state to get equipment and housing for the more than 57,000 migrants that have flooded into the city.

Hocul spoke to reporters, stating “It is a crisis situation, especially with the suspension of Title 42 on Thursday. It’s no surprise that there will literally be thousands of more individuals coming across the border and ultimately finding their way to the state of New York.” Hochul justifies the order, saying the state is in a “large-scale humanitarian crisis,” and warning that a “disaster is imminent” with the coming migrants, according to Silive

Hochul has also stated the hardest obstacle for them to overcome is getting the migrants approved to work legally within the states. She did note that farmers in New York needed roughly 5,000 workers.

Orange and Rockland counties, the counties that New York City attempted to send the migrants to, executed their own state of emergency orders to attempt to block hotels from contracting New York City for housing migrants.

Hochul has attempted to calm these concerns, saying the state will look for new locations to house the migrants, potentially using state-owned facilities to house them. She also said that she would make sure the counties that take the migrants want them to be there.

The recently approved state budget also set aside $1 billion to help the city quell the surge of migrants as Adams has continued to beg for more resources to be funneled to the city, specifically criticizing the federal government for their lack of aid. Adams has said that the care for migrants has cost the city $4.3 billion in the past two years. However, at the rate the money is being spent as well as the expected influx, it’s unlikely the money set aside for New York City will last long.

New York seems to be falling deeper into a mess each and every day as more migrants are bused from the border into the metropolitan area. Adams and Hochul seem to stay firm in the ideals of allowing migrants to safely occupy the city.
