Following New York City’s complete failure to maintain the number of migrants pouring into the city from the southern border, Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Thursday requested that a judge revisit the city’s sanctuary city law.
"The law of sanctuary city was in place long before I became mayor. I’m following the law. As a law enforcement person, you know, we follow the law," Adams said, per The Post Millennial. "We are now in court now, today, asking the judge to revisit this law to deal with this humanitarian crisis because, even when they decided to put in place that law, no one thought they would be dealing with a humanitarian crisis of this proportion."
Adams has seen tens of thousands of migrants coming into the city. The influx has forced Adams to discuss closing down major streets to house the migrants. The mayor has most recently displaced homeless veterans in northern suburbs to make space for the illegals, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer.
Adams has already been working to roll back some regulations on housing the migrants, having signed an emergency declaration on Wednesday suspending the right-to-shelter rules that the city had in place. The rule required the city to find private rooms for every illegal immediately upon their arrival, something the city was simply not capable of doing.
Adams has attempted to maintain the moral high ground on the issue during his tenure so far, but it seems the cracks are beginning to shine through. Even with the $1 billion given to the city by the state's governor, the city still has been entirely unable to find proper locations to house the migrants.
Adams has been looking to northern suburbs of the Big Apple to take in the migrants, but they have been largely uncooperative in the efforts, claiming that they as well are incapable of housing the migrants. Orange County in New York even issued a state of emergency in an attempt to avoid housing the migrants, as reported by the DC Enquirer.
It’s clear to see that New York City simply cannot handle the crisis on its hands. Mayor Adams has done his best to adhere to the policy in place, but sanctuary cities are bound for ruin from the get-go. Perhaps this realization will show Democrats around the country the necessity to keep a strict border, as the country may be prosperous, but cannot house tens of thousands of illegals who provide no benefit to the country.
