Mexican President: Deadly US Fentanyl Crisis Caused By ‘A Lack Of Hugs’

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in a statement that is as baffling as it is tragically insulting that families in the United States are in fact to blame for the fentanyl overdose crisis that has claimed over seventy-thousand lives in 2022, according to the DEA. López Obrador claims these people died, not because of Mexican drug cartels pumping poison across the border, but because American families don’t hug their kids enough.

The Mexican head of state said Friday that America’s family values have broken down because we do not allow our children to live at home long enough. According to Fox10 Phoenix, he also obtusely claimed that Mexico doesn’t produce fentanyl, an irrelevant point given that most fentanyl is produced in China, smuggled into Mexico, and then into the United States as reported by the Wilson Center for Foreign Relations.

López Obrador told a morning news briefing that America’s fentanyl crisis is caused by “a lack of hugs, of embraces.”

“There is a lot of disintegration of families, there is a lot of individualism, there is a lack of love, of brotherhood, of hugs and embraces,” he continued.

“That is why they (U.S. officials) should be dedicating funds to address the causes,” adding that the family values of the Mexican people are what has saved the struggling nation from the wave of fentanyl overdoses sweeping the western world. Fox10 Phoenix reported that to the contrary, Mexican drug cartels have found sales in the U.S. so lucrative that there is no need to sell where they live.

The Associated Press reports that López Obrador criticized U.S. anti-drug policies as a failure, and proposed that both Mexico and the U.S., ban the medical use of fentanyl.

The AP noted, “U.S. authorities estimate that most illegal fentanyl is produced in clandestine Mexican labs using Chinese precursor chemicals. Relatively little of the illegal market comes from diverting medicinal fentanyl used as anesthesia in surgeries and other procedures.”

The Mexican President held a massive national rally March 18th in which he celebrated the 85th anniversary of Mexico’s nationalization of its oil reserves.

He told the gathered crowds, “Mexico is an independent and free country and not a colony or a protectorate of the United States,” according to France24.

He reportedly condemned U.S. authorities suggesting the declaration of Mexican Cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. and suggested that the U.S. has cartels as well.

“We are not going to permit any foreign government to intervene in our territory, much less that a government’s armed forces intervene,” Lopez Obrador said during a March 9th briefing reported by Reuters.
