Yesterday Representative James Comer (R-KY) called out Joe Biden for suppressing the National Archives from commenting about Biden’s numerous classified documents scandal. In Mr. Comer’s letter to Jeff Zients, the White House’s chief of staff, he demanded answers on that score.
The letter noted that “when the Washington Post broke the story that classified documents were found in President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, NARA [National Archives] employees, including Gary Stern [NARA’s general counsel], drafted and published a statement on the agency’s website that same day.” Mr. Comer contrasted Trump’s treatment with the treatment that Biden received in a similar situation.
Comer wrote that “[o]n January 31, 2023, the Committee conducted a transcribed interview with National Archives and Records Administration’s (NARA) general counsel, Gary Stern. The interview revealed information regarding President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents and NARA’s response.”
He continued by writing that “[d]uring questioning by Committee counsel, Mr. Stern acknowledged that on January 9, 2023, when CBS broke the news that President Biden stored classified materials at Penn Biden Center, 2 NARA drafted a public statement in response. Mr. Stern disclosed to the Committee that someone outside of NARA withheld its release.”
Mr. Comer demanded that Mr. Zients provide “answers, documents, and communications ” on whether it was the White House that was responsible for the withholding of NARA’s statement, whether they could provide information on who specifically ordered this, the documents and communications behind this decision, and whether Biden will release his attorneys’ and representatives’ communication with NARA “for public view.”

The Republican lawmaker stated that Mr. Zients had until March 21st to provide the necessary answers and documentation.

Mr. Comer has also given an update about his frustrations with the US Treasury Department’s refusal to hand over potentially incriminating documents about the Biden family. In a tweet, Comer wrote that the US Treasury “says that they are cooperating with my Biden family investigation but all we’ve seen is obstruction. @GOPoversight is done with the excuses. I’m calling on Assistant Secretary Jonathan Davidson to answer questions under the penalty of perjury next week.”
