January 6 Committee Members Fear They Will Be Arrested If Trump Wins In November, Report

Democrats who sat on the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack fear that if 45th President Donald Trump wins another term in November, they would face potential retaliation or arrest, according to a recent CBS News report. The worry comes after Trump went after committee vice chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) on Truth Social, writing last month, "She should go to Jail along with the rest of the Unselect Committee!"

The January 6 Committee has been caught repeatedly embellishing events from that day, withholding evidence and witnesses from their findings, and utilizing the public hearings to launch political attacks against Donald Trump in an attempt to handicap his presidential campaign. A statement from the Trump campaign relayed as much, "Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Liz Cheney, and the Corrupt Democrats on the sham January 6th Committee have lied to the American public for years, denied key witnesses from testifying to the truth, and covered up evidence that proved President Trump, nor any of his supporters, ever engaged in an alleged' insurrection.' Their entire narrative is a lie, and Americans know that Joe Biden is the true threat to democracy."

While Trump has a reputation for being boastful and has clarified that his pursuit of "retribution" will be in the form of presidential successes, that hasn't stopped Democrat lawmakers from attempting to fearmonger. "My wife and I have had conversations about what life would look like if the worst happened," Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who routinely lied to the American people to push the Russia collusion conspiracy theory, said. "You can't avoid the conversations about 'What if?' And I have to think about my own personal safety."

Another lawmaker who sat on the committee, House Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Pete Aguillar (D-CA), explained to CBS that he takes Trump's threats seriously, telling reporters that if he was sent to a local D.C. jail, "My family has told me that they're going to come to D.C. either way — and they'll visit me, no matter where I am."

"One of the things that I observed during our January 6 committee work was that when Trump says something, he intends to do it," Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) said. "I take that lesson to heart. When he says various things, I think that's what he means he'll do."

The House January 6 Committee was disbanded after Republicans took control of the lower chamber in January 2023. The two Republicans on the committee, Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) were defeated in a primary or refused to run for reelection, respectively.
