Last Wednesday, woke Hollywood star John Leguizamo claimed he is boycotting the new ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie for not having enough ‘inclusion.’
“No, I will not [watch Super Mario Bros]. They could’ve included a Latin character. Like I was groundbreaking and then they stopped the groundbreaking. They messed up the inclusion. They dis-included,” John Leguizamo told TMZ.
John Leguizamo is referencing his role as Luigi Mario in the critically panned ‘Super Mario Bros.’ — widely considered one of the worst films ever made. Leguizamo, who is Columbian-born, represented the iconic Italian plumber in the 1993 film.
When asked by TMZ if he thinks viewers should boycott the film, Leguizamo sidestepped the question, saying, “Just cast some Latin folk! We’re 20% of the population. The largest people of color group and we are underrepresented. Overrepresented in the worst kind of jobs though!”
TMZ ended by asking the actor if he intended to see the film. To this question, Leguizamo replied: “Hell no!”

This is not the first time Leguizamo has blasted the new movie. In September of 2021, Leguizamo tweeted, “So glad #superMariobros is getting a reboot! Obviously it’s iconic enuff. But too bad they went all white! No Latinx in the leads! Groundbreaking color-blind casting in original! Plus I’m the only one who knows how to make this movie work script wise!”

Despite calls for boycotts from this Hollywood star, Super Mario Bros. performed exceptionally well during its opening weekend. According to Variety, the film has had the best opening weekend of 2023. It also achieved the best-performing five-day debut of all time, debuting last Wednesday.
One can speculate on why Super Mario Bros. did so well. Perhaps it is because it was a family-friendly film that didn’t seek to stoke culture wars. Perhaps the film succeeded because it did service to a beloved videogame character. Whatever the case may be, we can be sure of this: if ‘Super Mario Bros.’ had dove headfirst into woke ideology, the film would certainly have not been the transcendent success it actually ended up being.
