Democratic Representative Colin Allred (D-TX) announced his campaign for Texas' Senate seat Wednesday morning, looking to flip the seat held by incumbent Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).
In a video announcement posted to Twitter, Allred stated, “Texans deserve a Senator whose team is Texas. Ted Cruz only cares about himself.”
In the video, Allred describes his upbringing with his single mom who worked two jobs. He also detailed the influence YMCA counselors and football coaches had on him during his youth. Allred also touted the bipartisan work he has done in Congress, working with Republicans on veterans affairs, trade, and manufacturing legislation. He discussed his experience on January 6th, saying he texted his wife, “No matter what happens, I love you.” Then stating, “I took off my jacket, and got ready to take on anyone who came through that door.”
Allred would attack Cruz by claiming the senator doesn’t care about the real issues facing Texans, stating that Senator Cruz “Spends months trying to whip up phony culture wars, but not a minute trying to raise wages or lower drug prices.” He would attack Cruz on January 6th, claiming that Cruz was hiding in a supply closet during January 6th, while also citing one of the protestors who stated that Cruz “Would want us to do this.” Allred’s main theme throughout the ad was that Cruz was “All hat, but no cattle.”
It will be an uphill battle for the 3-term congressman from Texas’s 32nd District (North Dallas, Garland, Wylie) to beat the incumbent senator.
No Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas since 1988, and Senator Cruz is no easy incumbent. Cruz won his first Senate term in 2012, defeating former Texas State Representative Paul Sadler by 16.5 points. In 2018, Senator Cruz faced a tough challenge in the form of former Congressman Beto O’Rourke. O’Rourke would receive endorsements and funding from all across the country but would ultimately lose to Cruz by only 2.5 points.
Allred, a former NFL linebacker and lawyer, has been in Congress since stunning incumbent Representative Pete Sessions in the 2018 midterms, winning a seat many viewed as unwinnable. Until now, Allred’s tenure in Congress has been relatively uneventful, most notably, he voted to impeach former President Donald Trump both in 2018 and in 2021.
As of publishing, there has been no word from Senator Cruz about Allred launching his campaign.
