On Wednesday, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) joined Eric Bolling on Newsmax to discuss Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's leadership and the next steps for the foreign aid package in the House. Cruz, a longtime critic of the Kentucky GOP leader, reasserted his demand that McConnell lose his leadership role and allow another Republican to take up the mantle.
"When it comes to frustration with Mitch, you're preaching to the choir, and I have been vocal for a long, long time that Mitch McConnell is not leading the Senate Republicans effectively, that he's not fighting for conservative principles, that he's not honoring the promises we made to the voters," Cruz told Bolling. "That divide is fundamental at the rage and fury people feel towards Washington."
Cruz went on to explain that the border bill negotiated in the Senate was a "complete train wreck" that normalized 5,000 illegal immigrants a day and assigned taxpayer-funded lawyers and work permits. "We killed it. I was proud to stand up and lead the effort to kill this bill. Unfortunately, what did Republican leadership say? 'If you're not willing to pass a bad bill on border security, then, to heck with it, we won't pass any, so we'll just fund the Democrat funding.'" Cruz then explained that he believes that House leadership will attempt to attach HR2, the strongest border security bill in Congress, to the foreign aid package to force Democrat Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) hand.
Bolling then pressed Cruz on whether he would be willing to take up McConnell's role as Senate Republican leader, which Cruz dodged. "Well, one step at a time," the Texas senator said. "I've said publicly, more than once, I think it's time for Mitch to go. That he is not effectively leading the conference."
"And I think there's enormous frustration in the conference right now, with the job that is being done because the last three months, the winners: Chuck Schumer and every Senate Democrat are winners. Why? Because Republican leadership stands up and says, 'Hey, this bill we negotiated was great.' It wasn't great. It was terrible," Cruz asserted. "But when Republican leadership says it, you know what? Every Senate Democrat repeats those words."
Mitch McConnell has repeatedly been unwilling to stand up for what Republican voters demand. He has been in the Senate for decades, and his recent freeze-ups prove that his time to leave has come. He should allow newer, fresher blood to come in and lead the Republican conference so that the party can evolve and prioritize America First principles.
