Elon Musk receives the National Medal of Science from President Trump this afternoon at the White House, at an event called the Science: A New Golden Age Summit.
Sources told Fox News Digital that the two men have fully reconciled. One former administration official summarized the entire arc in four words.
"Water under the bridge."
Let us review the bridge.
The fight, for anyone who has mercifully forgotten.
Musk left government in May 2025 after running DOGE. Shortly after, he called the President's signature tax and spending bill a disgusting abomination.
Trump responded that Musk had been wearing thin on him and had gone, in the President's capitalization, CRAZY.
Musk then claimed Trump would not have won in 2024 without his money, accused him of ingratitude, echoed calls for his impeachment, and alleged the President appeared in documents connected to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
Trump floated reviewing Musk's federal contracts.
Musk deleted the posts.
Water. Under. The bridge.
Political Wire ran the Fox story under a headline asking how Musk got back into Trump's orbit, and then answered its own question in six words.
Short answer: he has a trillion dollars.
That is the finest piece of political analysis published this week and it took one line.
Now the part that is actually worth your attention.
The medal is the smaller story. Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth named Musk co-director of a panel advising the Pentagon on the future of warfare.
Read that slowly. The Department of Defense is one of the largest sources of Musk's personal fortune. SpaceX holds enormous federal launch and satellite contracts. Starlink is woven into military communications.
He is now helping direct a group that advises the agency writing those checks.
Nobody is hiding this. The New York Times wrote it up plainly, and if you are waiting for someone in Washington to be embarrassed about it, clear your schedule.
And here is the irony nobody is saying out loud.
Musk was brought into government to cut spending. That was the entire premise of DOGE. Find the waste, kill it, save the taxpayer hundreds of billions.
By the Times' accounting, he did not come close to his stated goals and left several agencies in disarray.
So the man who was hired to shrink the federal budget, and largely did not, is now back as an adviser to the single largest discretionary line item in that budget, which also happens to be his biggest customer.
That is not a comeback. That is a promotion.
To be fair, because we try to be.
The National Medal of Science is not an absurd honor for this particular recipient. Whatever you think of the man's posting habits, he built reusable orbital rockets at a moment when the American space program was renting seats from Russia. SpaceX is a genuine national asset. Starlink has done real things in real wars.
If you were making a list of living Americans who have moved the needle on applied science, he is on it.
The award is defensible. The timing is the joke.
The lesson, which is bipartisan and permanent.
Here is what every conservative should take from this, and it has nothing to do with liking or disliking either man.
In Washington, there is no grudge that survives contact with sufficient money. None. Not an accusation about Epstein files. Not a public threat to cancel someone's federal contracts. Not a call for impeachment.
Fourteen months, a few deleted posts, a long make-nice campaign, and you are standing in the East Room getting a medal and co-chairing a Pentagon advisory board.
That is not a Trump thing. James Carville is quoted this week being scandalized by consultants moonlighting overseas, which is a fine objection from a man who consulted for a Brazilian president. Everybody in this town has a price list. The only variable is whether you can afford it.
Twenty-six days until the midterms. The people who will decide this election are not getting medals and they are not advising the Pentagon.
They are filling out ballots at their kitchen tables.
That is still the only part of this system that money cannot buy outright, and it is worth remembering on a day like today.
