For years, Democrats insisted Republicans were exaggerating when they warned that the Democratic Socialists of America wanted to fundamentally remake America. Turns out the DSA's response was essentially: Actually... yes.
In an interview Sunday with Fox News' Shannon Bream, DSA National Co-Chair Megan Romer was given what should have been an easy game of "true or false." Instead, it became an infomercial for tearing down the American system of government.
Abolish the Senate? True.
Replace the presidency and Supreme Court "as we now know them?" Also true.
Abolish ICE? Absolutely.
Open borders and amnesty for everyone here illegally? According to Romer, that's the long-term plan.
Defund the Pentagon? Sure.
Abolish prisons? At least "in large part."
Government ownership of major corporations? You guessed it: absolutely.
At this point, the only thing missing from the checklist was free unicorns and mandatory participation trophies.
For years, Americans have been told conservatives were fearmongering whenever they warned that the socialist left wanted to dismantle America's institutions. Now the movement's own leadership is happily checking the boxes on national television.
The remarkable part isn't that the DSA believes these things. They've published versions of these ideas for years. The remarkable part is the confidence. There's no attempt to soften the rhetoric or pretend these are fringe concepts anymore. The sales pitch has shifted from "that's not what we believe" to "of course that's what we believe."
Even more revealing was Romer's message to establishment Democrats. Rather than worrying about Republicans, she suggested Democrats should worry about her movement.
According to Romer, Democratic candidates backed by the DSA are resonating with voters while the party establishment continues to disappoint its base. She argued that running on the Democratic ballot line is simply the most practical path to office—not because the DSA has suddenly become moderate, but because it's the fastest vehicle for advancing its agenda.
That should probably get the attention of anyone still insisting the socialist wing is just a noisy sideshow.
And there are signs the movement is gaining ground.
A number of DSA-backed candidates have defeated establishment Democrats in recent primaries, including Claire Valdez in New York's 7th District, Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York's 13th, and Brad Lander in New York's 10th with support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Additional victories came from Aber Kawas, Samantha Kattan, David Orkin, Eon Huntley, Christian Tate, Illapa Sairitupac, Melat Kiros in Colorado, Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania, and Janeese Lewis George in Washington, D.C.
Republicans have been quick to seize on the interview.
House Speaker Mike Johnson argued that the DSA agenda would "shred the U.S. Constitution, seize private property, and make Americans vulnerable to violent attacks at home and abroad," calling it a choice between "common sense and CRAZY."
Hyperbole? Maybe.
But when the other side is openly talking about abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency, eliminating borders, dismantling the military, and nationalizing large corporations, Republicans hardly have to write the attack ads anymore.
Sometimes your political opponents save you the trouble by writing them themselves.
