Despite Declining Ratings, Hostility Toward Trump, Fox News Anchors To Moderate First GOP Debate

News broke Tuesday afternoon that the first debate of the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and will be hosted by Fox News' Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.

The initial announcement from Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel that Fox News would host the debate came in April when she said, "the next President of the United States will be on our debate stage, and we look forward to hosting a fair and transparent platform for our great candidates to debate and share our winning Republican message with voters across the country."

The decision comes at a contentious moment between the 45th President Donald J. Trump and Fox News. Trump concludes a two-part interview with Baier Tuesday night and has been known to disagree vigorously with the host on a number of issues.
Baier rejects Trump's assertions that he won the 2020 Presidential election, while he vocally criticized Fox for diminishing viewership and terminating Tucker Carlson.

FOX News Media President Jay Wallace said in a statement, "We are extremely proud to have Bret and Martha moderating the first debate of the 2024 presidential election season as Americans learn more about the candidates ahead of exercising their constitutional right to vote."

According to Deadline, the debate is scheduled to be held on August 23rd from 9 p.m. EST to 11 p.m. EST.

In an April post to TruthSocial when news of the debate began to break, Trump was direct in his criticism which has led many to contemplate that he could refuse to participate.

He wrote, "I see that everybody is talking about the Republican Debates, but nobody got my approval, or the approval of the Trump Campaign, before announcing them. When you’re leading by seemingly insurmountable numbers, and you have hostile Networks with angry, TRUMP & MAGA hating anchors asking the “questions,” why subject yourself to being libeled and abused? Also, the Second Debate is being held at the Reagan Library, the Chairman of which is, amazingly, Fred Ryan, Publisher of The Washington Post. NO!"

According to a statement from the RNC, a second night of debates on the 24th may be arranged if a sufficient number of prospective candidates meet its criteria in the areas of filing status, polling, fundraising, and pledging to participate in only RNC-sanctioned debates and "support the eventual party nominee." The latter two may certainly give the 45th President pause.
