Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) revealed on Monday morning that she would be expecting her first child while serving in Congress, making her the 12th woman in the entire history of the legislative body to give birth while serving.
Luna spoke to Time, where she said “We are very excited to welcome our son later this summer. Children are a blessing and we could not have asked for a greater gift.”
Luna represents Florida's 13th congressional district, which she has served since being elected in 2022. Luna first ran for the position in 2020 but lost to the incumbent Charlie Crist. Luna has been rising in the Republican political world after receiving an endorsement from Donald Trump for her 2022 congressional campaign. Donald Trump spoke highly of Luna, stating she was a “great fighter” who “puts America first” per the Tampa Bay Times. In return for Trump's support, she was among the first Republicans to endorse his 2024 presidential campaign.
Luna also served in the U.S. Air Force before pursuing her political career, where she met her now husband, Andy Gamberzky. Luna has also written a book on the effects of PTSD on military service members, titled ‘Bringing Them Home: The Untold Cost of Putting Mission First.’
Luna previously worked as the director of Hispanic outreach for Turning Point USA before being elected into Congress. In Congress, Luna has joined the House Freedom Caucus as well as been appointed to the House Oversight Committee, both major accomplishments for a first-term elected official.
Pregnancy is a major deal in Congress, with only 0.1% of members of Congress having ever been pregnant while holding the esteemed office.
Luna is currently with a delegation of House members in South Korea that is set to return Tuesday. The Florida Republican will continue to serve her constituents in Congress until the annual congressional summer recess, which begins in July, and luckily coincides with her baby’s due date.
Luna’s pregnancy helps to highlight a new age for mothers, one where they can both work a successful job and build a happy and healthy home.
