What was supposed to be a routine Senate Armed Services Committee hearing erupted into chaos when an anti-war protester stormed the chamber, forcing Capitol Police to physically drag him out as stunned witnesses looked on.
The disruption came when Brian McGinnis, an anti-war activist and Green Party Senate candidate from North Carolina, suddenly began shouting during the hearing, railing against U.S. military policy and accusing lawmakers of pushing the nation toward war.
But his protest didn’t last long.
Capitol Police quickly moved in to remove McGinnis from the room. Instead of leaving peacefully, the activist violently resisted, grabbing onto a doorway and fighting officers as they tried to escort him out.
That’s when things turned even more dramatic.
Montana Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, rushed in to help officers control the situation as the protester continued to thrash and cling to the doorframe.
Witnesses say the struggle intensified as officers attempted to pull McGinnis free. Then came a chilling moment: a loud snap was reportedly heard as the protester’s arm appeared to break during the chaotic struggle.
Gasps erupted from the gallery as police finally managed to wrestle the protester out of the hearing room.
Authorities later said the protester had intentionally wedged his arm into the door while resisting removal — escalating an already volatile situation and putting officers and bystanders at risk.
The confrontation left three Capitol Police officers injured and the protester himself hospitalized.
McGinnis was arrested and now faces multiple charges, including assaulting police officers, resisting arrest, and unlawful demonstration inside the Capitol.
Afterward, Sen. Sheehy defended his decision to jump into the fray, saying he stepped in to help officers restore order and prevent the confrontation from spiraling even further out of control.
“This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation,” Sheehy said afterward, adding that he hoped the protester would get help without causing further violence.
The shocking scene underscores just how explosive tensions have become around U.S. foreign policy debates — with political protests now spilling directly into the halls of Congress.
But on this day, the protest ended not with applause or headlines for the activist — but with handcuffs, injuries, and a dramatic scene that stunned the Senate chamber.
