On Friday, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the Biden administration's handling of the Maui wildfires that resulted in at least 115 dead.
Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) are leading the way to hold the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) accountable for its response, or lack thereof.
“The deadly wildfire in Maui shocked the nation and left many, especially those directly impacted by the tragedy, with serious questions that remain unanswered today," the two lawmakers said in a statement. "President Biden built his entire reputation on empathy and compassion but failed to deliver an appropriate response when it mattered most."
"To ensure locals are receiving the assistance they need, and taxpayer dollars being used effectively, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is taking action and seeking information from FEMA on all ongoing recovery efforts in Maui," the pair explained. "The Oversight Committee has a responsibility to ensure FEMA is utilizing every tool at their disposal efficiently and will work to ensure FEMA delivers assistance in a seamless, swift timeframe."
The two lawmakers sent a letter to FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell informing her of the investigation that originated after the response was "hindered and delayed."
President Biden was delayed in his response as well only choosing to venture to Hawaii nearly two weeks after the wildfires devastated the town of Lahaina as hundreds of families still searched for loved ones.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Biden was met with angry Hawaiians who, upon his landing in Maui, held up signs reading "You're too late" and "Actions speak louder than words" with many of them arguing that the president should have shown up to the devastated community sooner.

Biden partook in a helicopter tour of the island to survey the damage before venturing to Lahaina to give remarks.
"While Biden flies around in circles above Maui, residents are TRAPPED on closed roads for the next several hours," journalist Nick Sortor reported. "Biden will then be meeting with pre-selected “residents” and will NOT be taking media questions. Go figure. Police are telling me that residents are SUPER frustrated and many are missing work because of the road closures."

Biden was able to meet with various first responders, however, he was seen joking about the "hot" temperatures of the ground at a moment when Hawaiians were not in a joking mood.

Making matters even worse, Biden infamously was seen falling asleep during a community engagement with the affected families at the Lahaina Civic Center.
