BREAKING: Republicans Choose House Speaker After Contentious Vote

On Wednesday, House Republicans chose their candidate for speaker of the Hosue after a contentious hours-long meeting to decide who would lead their party after the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speakership by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his allies.

The vote came down to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-FL) and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA). Both men were viable candidates for the position, but many GOP moderates saw Jordan as too conservative to advance as the leader of the conference.

Given this, the GOP conference, after taking a secret ballot, decided that Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) would be their nominee for speaker of the House after winning a majority of the Republican conference's vote.

According to early reports, the vote was 113 in favor of Scalise and 99 in favor of Jordan. Nine members voted present.

The conference's selection of a speaker will likely allow them to avoid the chaos seen on the Hosue floor in January that resulted in McCarthy securing the gavel only after 15 votes. The closed-door process sought to avoid that embarrassment and allow the members to come to a conclusion away from the public eye.

As of this report, it is unclear when the Hosue will officially vote on the speakership as the Republicans plan to nominate Scalise and the Democrats nominate Rep. Hakeem Jefferies (D-NY). Given the small majority that Republicans enjoy, if even a few GOP members stray from the plan of electing Scalise it could very well lead to a plethora of ballots taken as seen in January.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
