During an interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) refused to voice her full support for President Joe Biden to stay in the race, instead opting to let the president choose the path forward rather than trying to force him out or encourage him to stay. Pelosi's comments come after a handful of House Democrats have called on the 81-year-old Democrat to step aside following a disastrous debate performance last month.
When asked if she wants Biden to run for re-election, Pelosi explained that she wants the president to "do whatever he decides to do" but added that "time is running short" for a final decision to be made given the upcoming Democratic National Convention next month. "He's beloved. He's respected, and people want him to make that decision, not me," Pelosi said.
Biden has doubled down multiple times this week that he will be staying in the race, telling congressional Democrats in a letter on Monday that he's not going anywhere. "I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump," Biden wrote.
"We had a Democratic nomination process, and the voters have spoken clearly and decisively," Biden explained. "This was a process open to anyone who wanted to run. Only three people chose to challenge me. One fared so badly that he left the primaries to run as an independent. Another attacked me for being too old and was soundly defeated. The voters of the Democratic Party have voted. They have chosen me to be the nominee of the party."
Rep. Pelosi explained that Democrats are going to restart conversations on Biden's eligibility to run for re-election following the NATO conference in Washington, D.C., where President Biden will hold his first press conference following the debate on Thursday.
Many Democrats have voiced a similar message with Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV), an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, that congressional Democrats will wait until this weekend to make a final decision on whether to come out more publicly against the sitting president or remain loyal and support the president's re-election bid.
