On Monday evening, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) officially filed a motion to vacate the chair against Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) after the Republican leaders worked with Democrats to ensure the government remained open and the 45-day stopgap spending measure passed.
The House of Representatives will now have two days to take up Gaetz's motion to consider whether Speaker McCarthy will lose his job as speaker.
Gaetz vowed to oust McCarthy over the weekend while speaking to CNN after the California Republican worked with Democrats to pass the spending bill despite many on the Republicans' right flanks objecting to such a scenario.
Gaetz led a coalition of roughly 20 Republicans, many of whom challenged his speakership in January, who pushed McCarthy to attempt to get more concessions out of the Senate and House Democrats. This has led the Florida Republican to be criticized by his fellow members with some even considering expelling him if a House Ethics Committee investigation shows potential wrongdoing in an ongoing investigation.
The last time that a motion of vacate the chair took place was in 1910 and it has never been successfully used to oust a current speaker of the House. The coming showdown this week will surely weaken McCarthy's hold on power and put Democrats in a position of strength as they will likely be able to save McCarthy's speakership if they decide to. Their support would likely be contingent upon McCarthy giving a number of concessions as Gaetz and his Republican supporters attempt to hold McCarthy to the promises he made in January.
