On Monday, a number of left-wing demonstrators occupied the office of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Congress returned to session.
The activists stormed McCarthy's office in an effort to pressure McCarthy to reauthorize the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that addressed the HIV/AIDS epidemic, for five years.

According to POLITICO reporter Alice Miranda Ollstein, the protesters were a part of the organizations Housing Works and Health GAP. After only a few minutes of occupying the office, the protesters were "lined up against the wall and handcuffed" by Capitol Police.
"They’re being marched out in zip ties, still chanting 'pass PEPFAR now,'" Ollstein reported.
