BREAKING: Jim Jordan Loses First Speaker Vote, Here's The 20 Republicans Who Voted Against Him

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives convened to vote on the next speaker of the House after a contentious two weeks that began when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his allies ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speakership. After multiple House Republicans attempted to run for the position, including Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA), Jordan was rejected on the first ballot as 20 House Republicans turned on his candidacy.

Over the weekend, Jordan lobbied a number of Republican members to support his speakership candidacy including Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL), Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MI), and Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA). However, the initial vote for the speakership led to no candidate winning a majority with some GOP lawmakers voting for Scalise, former Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and others.

The 20 Republicans who voted against Jordan include:
  • Don Bacon (NE)
  • Ken Buck (CO)
  • Lori Chavez-Deremer (OR)
  • Anthony D'Esposito (NY)
  • Mario Diaz-Balart (FL)
  • Jake Ellzey (TX)
  • Andrew Garbarino (NY)
  • Carlos Gimenez (FL)
  • Tony Gonzales (TX)
  • Kay Granger (TX)
  • John James (MI)
  • Mike Kelly (PA)
  • Jen Kiggans (VA)
  • Nick LaLota (NY)
  • Doug Lamafla (CA)
  • Mike Lawler (NY)
  • John Rutherford (FL)
  • Mike Simpson (ID)
  • Victoria Spartz (IN)
  • Steve Womack (AR)
A number of House Republicans decided to back Jordan over the weekend thanks to Americans voicing their support for Jordan via phone calls to their members' congressional offices. If enough conservative Americans demand their lawmakers vote in favor of McCarthy, perhaps Jordan can win the nomination in subsequent votes.

Following the vote, the House went into recess.
