On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed a three-month continuing resolution (CR) to avoid a government shutdown later this month. The vote comes after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) failed to pass a six-month CR with the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act attached after 14 GOP lawmakers voted against the package.
The new spending deal, which will fund the government until December, was backed by the White House and fully supported by Democrats. The final vote on the three-month CR was 341 in favor, made up of all Democrats and a majority of Republicans, and 82 Republicans against it. The legislation will now head to the Senate, where it will be voted on before the spending deadline on September 30.
Before the vote, Speaker Johnson argued that "it would be political malpractice to shut the government down" and that while House leadership doesn't like putting forward CRs, it was "the last available play."
