'Believe Women'—Unless It's Politically Inconvenient? Gillibrand Under Fire for Silence

At the height of the #MeToo movement, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand made herself one of the loudest voices in Washington, demanding that powerful men be held accountable the moment allegations surfaced. She did not hesitate when the target was Al Franken. She did not hesitate when the target was Brett Kavanaugh. Back then, Democrats told America that silence was complicity.

Now the accused is a Democrat running for Senate — and suddenly the outrage machine has gone quiet.

Gillibrand has remained silent as troubling allegations surface against Maine Democratic Senate hopeful Graham Platner. His former girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, told The New York Times that Platner was physically aggressive during their relationship, alleging that he grabbed her hard enough to leave marks, pulled her from a cab during an argument, and once twisted her arm before pushing her into a bedroom and keeping her from leaving.

These are serious allegations. Yet from the same political class that once demanded instant condemnation, there has been little more than political calculation.

That is the double standard voters are seeing clearly. When accusations could be used against Republicans, Democrats wrapped themselves in moral certainty. When accusations threatened one of their own candidates, the lectures about accountability suddenly disappeared.

Platner was already facing controversy over a tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism, vulgar online posts, and inappropriate messages while married. Democratic leaders still stood by him. Gillibrand herself expressed confidence in his candidacy before the latest allegations became public.

At its core, this story is not just about Graham Platner. It is about hypocrisy, selective outrage, and whether Democratic leaders ever truly believed the standards they demanded of everyone else.

Americans deserve leaders who apply principles consistently — not only when it is politically useful. If Gillibrand once believed silence protected the powerful, then her silence now speaks volumes.
