On Friday night, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) faced steep opposition at a town hall held in Corona, Queens, where protestors shouted at the far-left congresswoman on her funding of the war in Ukraine, immigration, and the looming debt limit.
The elected official was interrupted numerous times during the night, with many hecklers getting into screaming matches with supporters of the New York representative. One man shouted, “American citizens before migrants. Where are you on the migrant issue? You piece of sh*t,” while holding American flags. That man was escorted off the premises by security.
That didn’t end the heckling for the night, as protestors repeatedly bashed representatives' support of sending American tax dollars to the Ukrainian military when discussing the looming debt limit. AOC spoke of how Biden should eliminate the debt ceiling and blamed Republicans, stating her disdain for the 2017 Trump tax cuts. Protestors then brought up the billions that have been sent to Ukraine in military aid, much of which the New Yorker has supported.
The representative stayed calm during the heckling, likely from the training she’s gotten over her numerous run-ins with dissenters. Even with her calmness, it was clear that she can’t hold the support of her constituents, with a notable number of people in protest at the event. The protestors often garnered more support than Ocasio-Cortez was able to garner, and that speaks a lot about her failing as an elected official.
