This week a Vermont Christian high school, Mid Vermont Christian School (MVCS), was banned from participating in future basketball tournaments after they refused to go up against a male identifying as a female last month.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, the Eagles, out of White River Junction were supposed to face off against the Lions out of Dorset, Vermont in the first round of the Vermont Division IV girls’ varsity tournament, but instead, the Christian athletes decided to forfeit their chance at a state title.
The Head of the School Vicky Fogg argued that the matchup of an all-girls team against a male player would be unfair and risk the safety of the young women.
“We withdrew from the tournament because we believe playing against an opponent with a biological male jeopardizes the fairness of the game and the safety of our players,” Fogg wrote in a statement to Fox News. “Allowing biological males to participate in women’s sports sets a bad precedent for the future of women’s sports in general.”
According to the school’s website, they seek to “glorify God by preparing students for college and for life through a program of academic excellence established in Biblical truth.”

Due to their decision, however, they are now facing consequences for standing up for their values.
The Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA) announced this week that the team would be banned from participating in all future basketball tournaments. The association justified its action by saying that Vermont state law allowed transgender athletes to compete in the sports that they identify with, as reported by The Daily Signal.
The VPA Executive Director Jay Nichols said that the board reached a unanimous decision, 15 to 0, to oust the school from future tournaments in an unprecedented move, as reported by Valley News.
“If you don’t want to follow VPA rules, that’s fine,” Nichols said. “But then you’re just not a VPA member. It’s fairly simple.”
It is unfortunate that the girls on the MVCS basketball team have been barred from participating in future tournaments. Apparently, the VPA values the playing time of a male who identifies as female more than the actual females themselves.
