After 45th President Donald Trump survived two attempted assassinations during his presidential campaign, President Joe Biden has reportedly instructed the National Security Council to tell Iran that any attempt on the Republican presidential candidate's life would be an act of war against the United States. The threat comes after the Islamic Republic made clear its intentions to try to eliminate Trump after the 45th president ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
The Iranian regime has made its intentions clear about assassinating top Trump administration officials in addition to President Trump. The Secret Service has spent around $150 million a year to protect these individuals, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former head of U.S. Central Command Gen. Kenneth McKenzie.
The Biden administration briefed the Trump campaign last month on the threat that Iran poses to the Republican candidate, which prompted the Trump campaign to request additional protection, including military aircraft capable of intercepting missiles. "This is extraordinarily serious," Assistant Attorney General for National Security Matt Olsen explained to POLITICO. "Iran has made it very clear that they are determined to seek retaliation against former officials in connection with the Soleimani strike."
"The U.S. would regard it as an act of war," House Intelligence Committee ranking member Rep. Jim Hines (D-CT) told the outlet. "Now, how we would respond to that, I don't know, but it would not be a pleasant day for the Iranian regime." In response to the threat posed by Iran, National Security Council Sean Savett explained that the Biden White House views the threat as a "national and homeland security matter of the highest priority," adding that the Middle Eastern nation would face "severe consequences" if it attempted to kill Trump or former Trump officials.
As reported by Fox News, Trump has called upon Biden to make it clear that Iran would face considerable consequences for any attempt on his life. "If I were the president, I would inform the threatening country, in this case, Iran, that if you do anything to harm this person, we are going to blow your largest cities and the country itself to smithereens," he said. When asked by reporters on Friday whether Trump needs more protection, particularly after two assassination attempts and credible threats from Iran, the president said he wants Trump to have anything he needs outside of F-15s.
"Look, what I've told the department is to give him every single thing he needs for his — as if he were a sitting president," he said, as reported by Fox. "Give him all that he needs. If it fits within that category, that's fine."
